J. Michael Capps is the Director of Bands at A.L. Stanback Middle School in Hillsborough, NC, where he has served since 2000. A native of Princeton, NC, he earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Trumpet Performance from Elon University in 1999.

Under his leadership, the Stanback bands have earned numerous honors, including the first middle school jazz performance at the NCMEA Conference (2006), multiple top ensemble awards at the Dixie Classic Festival (2009), and Most Outstanding Middle School Jazz Ensemble at the UNC Jazz Festival (2011).

Mr. Capps is an active adjudicator, guest conductor, performer, and brass instructor, and has held several leadership roles within NCMEA and the Central District Band Association. He lives in Mebane with his wife, Erin, daughter, Rylee, their cat Otis, and dog Ginger.
